My #4 moment of 2022 is the absolute putting masterclass that Cam Smith put on during round 4 of The Open Championship. Regardless of your thoughts on Smith going to LIV, you cannot deny how great he played that day.
Think about this - the leader, Rory McIlroy, would go bogey-free in the final round and wouldn't miss a green. There's no way anyone could catch him playing like that, could they? Smith would play pretty near perfect golf - shooting an 8 under par 64 (total of 20 under on the week) - and would make all the putts that Rory couldn't get to drop.
Standing on the 10th tee, Smith was still 3 shots back (2 under on the day), but that's where everything would change. He would birdie the next 5 holes to get back in it. On the infamous Road Hole, his approach shot would end up short and left of the green…with the Road Hole Bunker between him and the hole. He would pull out his putter (WHAT???) and would take the slope and end about 12 feet from the hole (which he would knock in for par).
Smith would go on to birdie 18 and lifted the Claret Jug as the Champion Golfer of the Year.
What a day, what a putter.
