New irons for 2025

Writer's picture: KatieKatie

One of my goals for 2024 was to get down to a single digit handicap. If I was able to get there, I was going to reward myself with an iron fitting. I began 2024 with a 13.2 handicap. I knew it was going to take some work to get to single digits and I was able to play well enough during the summer to get it down to 9.8 in mid-September.

I was able to save a bit of money and finally scheduled my iron fitting at the PGA Tour Superstore the day before Thanksgiving. I decided to go through the PGA Tour Superstore because I knew I could get reward points but, the main draw was that the fitting was free, with a purchase of over $200 or something like that.

This was the first time I've ever been fitted for clubs so it was a pretty new experience for me. I had an idea of what I was looking for going in but I was excited to hit a few different clubs to see which fit best for my swing.

For 2023 and 2024, I was playing with the Ping G425 irons (4-PW). The fitter had me hit my 7 iron just to get some baseline numbers. With the Ping G425 7 iron, I carried the ball about 135 yards with total yards being around 150 yards.

The first thing the fitter did was bring out a fitting club that gave you swing speed for recommendations for shafts. The recommended shaft for me was the Recoil Dart 65g graphite shaft. I did try a couple other comparable shafts but the Recoil shaft definitely fit me the best so that was the one we used for testing.

The first head I tried out was the TaylorMade P790 7 iron. I hit about 15-20 shots with the P790 and did see a bit of an improvement in the numbers but I never felt like I hit a decent shot. There wasn't a single shot where I thought, "that was a great strike."

The next head was the Callaway Apex Ai200. I saw similar numbers to what I saw with the P790 but I never felt like I hit a good shot with this club either.

I then tried the Ping i230. I finally felt like I hit a decent shot with the one, but I wasn't seeing a massive improvement over the G425 so this was a no go.

The fitter then pulled out the Mizuno Pro 245 7 iron. The look of this was a bit of a shock for me. When the fitter handed it to me, I thought it was a blade, it was that thin looking. I trusted the fitter knew what he was talking about so I gave it a few hits…and hit several back-to-back shots that just felt amazing. I kept hitting more and only hit 1 or 2 shots where it didn't feel right, but every other shot just felt so good. I was seeing the average carry for the Mizuno jump to 145 yards and total of 152. Not only was a I seeing a higher carry number and a few extra total yards, but the spin increased so I was stopping the ball quicker.

Needless to say, I went ahead and ordered the Mizuno Pro 425, 5-GW, with the Recoil Dart 65g graphite shafts. The bonus of custom ordering Mizuno irons…there is no upcharge for grips. This meant I was able to get the Golf Pride MCC Plus grips for no extra cost.

I've been practicing/playing with these for about 2 months now and they are just awesome clubs. They are so easy to hit and feel so good…until you hit that one thin shot and it just stings your hands. Next time you're in the market for new irons, check out Mizuno irons. You won't be sorry.

'Til next time. Fairways and greens y'all.
