My #3 moment of 2022...Imagine this…you start a golf tournament 6 strokes behind the leader, then you triple bogey the first hole and bogey the second. You're now 10 strokes back. Your tournament is over…right? You can't win. That's too much of a deficit to overcome. Not for Rory.
Rory McIlroy doesn't think like us. He never thinks he's out of it (just think of his fourth round at Augusta this year). Rory would go on to shoot 67 that day. Think about that for a second - through the first two holes, he was 4 over par (not counting his couple of strokes he had going into the tournament). What a round of golf. He would then go on to shoot 67 in round two and an incredible 63 in round 3 to put him in the final pairing with Scottie Scheffler.
Going in to the final round, Rory was 6 strokes back. He would bogey the first hole (as would Scheffler), but go on the shoot a front nine 32…while Scheffler shot a front nine 37…now Rory is only 1 stroke back…it's anyone's tournament.
Rory's putter was on fire and he would go on to shoot a, final score, of 66 for round 4, to end the tournament at 21 under par, one shot ahead of Scheffler and Sungjae Im.
His third career Tour Championship could not have capped off a better year. He may not have won a major in 2022, but the way he ended the year, that career grand slam is within reach. I cannot wait to see Rory's 2023.
We're getting to the end of the year and my top moments of 2022. Tomorrow, number 2.
